The Business & Sustainability Programme (BSP) Africa is facilitated by faculty drawn from CISL's world-class expert collective of influential thinkers from business, policy and academia. They will be supported by the CISL Africa team, who will engage with you throughout the course to enhance your overall learning experience and provide additional assistance where required.

Prof Richard Calland

CISL Fellow | Director, CISL Board Programmes | Chair of BSP Africa

Professor Richard Calland came to South Africa in 1994 to work on a voluntary basis for the ANC’s election campaign, following seven years as a barrister in London. He stayed in South Africa in order to take a position at democracy thinktank Idasa, to head a new parliamentary monitoring and information service during the heady days of the first democratic parliament. In due course he founded or co-founded a number of organisations including the Parliamentary Monitoring Group (PMG), the Open Democracy Advice Centre and CASAC – the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution on whose advisory council he still serves.
Following 16 years based at the University of Cape Town as an Associate Professor in Constitutional Law from 2007-2023, he is now Emeritus Associate Professor at UCT and a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the University of Witwatersrand School of Governance. Since 2022, he has led the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)’s new Board Leadership programme and in mid-2023 was appointed as Director of CISL’s new Africa programme, from its South African office. Previously, as a Fellow, he was a regular member of faculty on CISL leadership programmes with organisations such as Anglo American, Namdeb, PWC, Tata, the World Bank and African Development Bank.
He has a particular interest in multistakeholder governance, having been an advisor to the Construction Sector Transparency Initiative (CoST) since its inception, arising from his legal specialism in freedom of information. For ten years, he served as a member of the World Bank’s Access to Information Appeals’ Board, and has been consultant to the Green Climate Fund and European Bank of Reconstruction & Development on their respective information disclosure policy reviews.
A prominent political analyst, and a columnist for the Mail & Guardian newspaper in South Africa since 2001, his latest book – The Presidents: From Mandela to Ramaphosa, Leadership in The Age of Crisis – was published in late 2022. Earlier books include Anatomy of South Africa: Who holds the power? (2006), The Zuma Years (2012) and Make or Break: How the next three years will shape South Africa’s next three decades (2016). His debut play – The Brothers, Number One and a Weekend Special – was performed at the Market Theatre in April 2024.
He is a founder partner at political risk consultancy, The Paternoster Group, whose past and present clients include Discovery Health, Anglo American PLC, VWSA, Citadel Wealth, South32, Air Liquide, the New Zealand High Commission and the French Development Agency.

Susan Njoroge

CISL Fellow | Managing Director, Responsible Business Consulting | Programme Director of BSP Africa

Susan is deeply passionate about and committed to embedding sustainability thinking, practice, and authentic communications into business, education, and policy towards creating a world where we care about each other and our shared future. She is Managing Director, Responsible Business Consulting. Prior to consulting, Susan was Head, Sustainability & Community Engagement, Standard Chartered Bank Kenya. Before this, she worked with Unilever as Head of Corporate Affairs, East Africa and prior to that with DHL Express as Head of Marketing & Communications East Africa. She has held various management roles with DHL in corporate responsibility and communications in Europe and Asia. Susan also worked with CSR Europe, Europe’s leading business network for CSR, as Senior Programmes Manager leading CSR services delivery, project design and management for CSR Europe’s members.
She has over 20 years’ experience working with multinationals in Africa, Asia and Europe in sustainability and communications. Susan has worked in various leadership and management roles, driving national and regional sustainability strategy, programme delivery, multi-stakeholder partnerships, employee engagement and volunteering, external and internal communications, and crisis communications.
Susan is also an Executive Fellow at Strathmore University, Strathmore Business School, Kenya, and an alumna of the CISL Prince of Wales Business & Sustainability Programme, Stellenbosch.
She holds an Msc. Sustainable Development, with the University of London, SOAS. A bachelor’s degree in business management from Daystar University, Kenya, a Charted Institute of Marketing Diploma in Marketing Communications, a Public Relations Diploma from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

Pat Dwyer

Senior Associate, CISL and Founder of The Purpose Business (TPB)

Pat is the Founder of The Purpose Business (TPB), Asia’s leading advisory and consultancy who guide leaders to evolve business as a force for good – in the region and beyond. She is also is a Senior Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and sits on the Global Steering Committee of the Prince of Wales’s Business & Sustainability Programme. She serves as faculty and tutor across the CISL Executive Education programmes. She sits on the Sanofi Shared Care Collective, an advisory board for the leading consumer healthcare group now known as Opella.
Before TPB, Pat worked across international environmental NGOs before moving to the corporate world- pioneering the Chief Sustainability Role for Ayala Land, the Philippines’ most esteemed land developer and then for Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts as the first Global Head of CSR & Sustainability which became the first Asian hotel chain to be recognised in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Pat is regular keynote speaker and panel moderator on topics including purpose and leadership, responsible business, women’s empowerment and inclusion. She is World Economic Forum Young Global Leader and remains a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She is on the board of directors of Ignite Impact Fund Philippines and Enrich, a Hong Kong-based charity dedicated to the financial literacy of migrant domestic workers.
Pat holds an MA in Globalisation & Governance, certificates in Transformational Leadership from the University of Oxford and Global Leadership & Public Policy for the 21st Century from the Harvard Kennedy School.

Stefan Raubenheimer

Fellow, CISL and Director, Raubenheimer Climate Consulting

Stefan Raubenheimer started his career as a lawyer, first in general practice and then in labour and human rights law in South Africa in the 80’s. For the last 5 years of his career, in two partnerships, he extended his experience during the difficult final years of Apartheid and the fight to end that regime. His final work was to represent the accused on the Upington 25 death penalty political trial. He left the profession in 1991 to start his own office in conflict resolution and transition facilitation.
In 1999 he attended COP5, and started a career focused on how climate will impact the Global South. Stefan led various major projects from 1999 to 2023:

1. SouthSouthNorth CDM projects: Dutch funded programme in six developing countries over 2000 to 2008 testing elements of the Kyoto Protocol
2. Long Term Mitigation Scenarios Project for South African government: developed mitigation data and scenarios
3. Mitigation Action Plans and Scenarios Programme (MAPS): major international programme over 2010 to 2016 in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Chile (collaborating with South Africa) focusing on government-led long-term mitigation action and development of Paris contributions. www.mapsprogramme.org
4. Gestion: Programme for financing mitigation action in Peru, 2016 to 2021
5. IKI Latin America: upcoming programme in Brazil, Argentina and Peru developing mitigation action on NDC 1, and developing further mitigation potential, 2019 to 2021

Sibusiso Nkomo

Programme Manager, CISL Africa Programme

Sibusiso is the Africa programme manager at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Prior to joining CISL, Sibusiso worked in political polling at Afrobarometer. He has experience with a diverse background spanning media, academia, and think tanks. He held key roles at Afrobarometer, focusing on strategic partnerships, communications, and research. A major part of his work focused on the African Union.
Sibusiso Nkomo is CISL’s Programme Manager for the Africa Programme. He manages work streams on Africa executive education, foresight, innovation and CLG Africa. Sibusiso is also a faculty member on the Sustainability Practitioner Programme, FSD Africa Climate Finance Leadership Programme and BSP Africa. He also serves on the CISL foresight strategy group.
Prior to joining CISL, Sibusiso worked in political polling at Afrobarometer. He was a research associate at the University of Cape Town, including the Centre for Social Science Research, then the Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa, and lastly, a doctoral research fellow in the Archive and Public Culture Research Initiative. Sibusiso has published widely, particularly on democratic governance and public policy and media in Africa.
He began his professional journey as a newspaper journalist, specialising in government and political reporting for The Sunday Independent, Cape Argus and Cape Times. Sibusiso has also worked for Good Governance Africa, Afrobarometer and the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation. He has also presented at major governmental organisations including the East African Community, the African Union, African Development Bank, United Nations, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the South African Government and US Congress etc.
Sibusiso holds a BA and Postgraduate Diploma from Stellenbosch University and a MA from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Malcom Gray

Senior Associate, CISL and Partner and Chief Financial Officer ERM Libryo

Malcolm is CFO and a co-founder of Libryo, a UK based legal tech start-up with a sustainability bias. Prior to co-founding Libryo he spent 16 years working for Investec Asset Management in a number of senior roles, including Head of Client Service, Portfolio Manager and Global Head of ESG.
Malcolm has been involved in the establishment of a number of key sustainability initiatives in South Africa and abroad. He was a founding member of the JSE SRI Index Advisory Board, the world’s first emerging market Sustainability Index. He was a member of SAICA Integrated Reporting Working Group which developed the original guidelines for Integrated Reporting (). He was the conceptualiser and founding portfolio manager of the WWF Living Planet Fund in South Africa.
Malcolm, an admitted attorney, graduated with a BSc in Geology and Hydrology, an LLB and an LLM in Environmental Law. Malcolm held a Gencor bursary and during his BSc and LLB studies spent time working on mineral sands exploration projects in the Free State, gold mining in Stilfontein and during his legal studies at the mining rights department in Johannesburg.
Malcolm is a Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and a faculty member on a number of their programmes. He contributes and teaches on sustainability, climate change, sustainable finance and regulation. He is an ALI Fellow and a member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
Malcolm is married to Colleen and they have three wonderful boys: Daniel, James and Joshua. They live in Cape Town and share a passion for travel. He and the boys are also snowboard enthusiasts! Malcolm enjoys running, cycling and yoga.

Dr. Irene Amoke

CISL Senior Associate, Independent Consultant | Founder & Director, ConserveAbility Pathways Ltd | Strategic Advisor, Kenya Wildlife Trust

Dr Irene Amoke is a landscape ecologist with over twenty years of practical experience. Her expertise lies in developing and implementing strategies for sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife, particularly in fragile ecosystems. With a background in conservation science and policy, strategic leadership, and programme management, she has contributed to and worked in academia, government, and the private sector in Kenya, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. As Founder of ConserveAbility Pathways Ltd, a Kenyan-based consulting firm, Irene works with conservation organisations to translate broad goals into measurable outcomes, bridging the gap between strategic vision and implementation. She advises on organisational development, programme management, and sustainable financing. Irene also serves as a Strategic Advisor to Kenya Wildlife Trust, strengthening conservation impact and institutional sustainability. Previously, as Executive Director of KWT, she led conservation strategy, enhanced partnerships and community engagement, and spearheaded fundraising efforts
Irene holds a PhD in Landscape Ecology, an MSc in Environmental Assessment & Management, and a BSc in Zoology. She is an Eisenhower Fellow (2022 Africa Climate Change Programme) and a Women in Environment, Africa Fellow (2023). Passionate about natural capital and nature-based solutions, she serves on various national and international boards. She is also a mentor and facilitator, supporting conservation leadership across Africa.

Susan Maingi

CISL Senior Associate and Public Affairs and Communications Director, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa

Susan Maingi is the Public Affairs and Communications Director at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa. In this role, she oversees regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability initiatives across the continent. Prior to joining Coca-Cola, Susan held the position of Director of Corporate Affairs, Communications, and Sustainable Development at LafargeHolcim in Kenya, after serving as the HR and Organizational Director for Kenya and Uganda. Her career also includes experience as an HR consultant with firms like KPMG and TACK International, working across multiple countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Susan's diverse background has equipped her with a unique perspective on public affairs, communication, and human resource management.

Dr. Vincent Ogutu

Vice Chancellor, Strathmore University

Dr. Vincent Ogutu is the Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University in Nairobi, Kenya. With a PhD in Organisational Management from Rutgers University, an MSc in Financial Economics from the University of London, and a BA in Economics from the University of Nairobi, Dr. Ogutu has a rich academic background. Prior to his current role, he served as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Planning and Development) and Vice Dean for Executive Talent Development at Strathmore University Business School. He also held the position of Deputy Principal at Strathmore School from 1996 to 2006. Dr. Ogutu is passionate about inspiring students to realize their potential for personal growth and social impact. He has delivered a TEDx talk at IESE Business School in Barcelona, urging individuals to commit to causes that resonate with them. Beyond academia, he sits on the boards of organizations such as Strathmore University Foundation, B Lab East Africa, and Nafisika Trust, and advises several startups in Kenya and the USA.

Dr. Nadia S. Ouedraogo

Economic Affairs Officer, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

Dr. Nadia S. Ouedraogo is an Economic Affairs Officer at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). Her work focuses on energy economics, with a particular emphasis on renewable energy and its role in sustainable development across the African continent. She has contributed to various research publications and policy papers aimed at promoting energy access and addressing climate change challenges in Africa.

William Nyaoke

Regional Director, East Africa, Norfund

William Nyaoke is the Regional Director for East Africa at Norfund, the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries. He is responsible for overseeing investment strategies and operations aimed at fostering economic development and job creation in East African countries. His work involves identifying viable investment opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, financial services, and agribusiness to stimulate sustainable growth in the region.

Dr. Nyangasi Oduwo

Financial Specialist

Dr Nyangasi Oduwo is a financial advisory, infrastructure strategy and project development specialist. He has extensive experience in project and program development. He enjoys an expansive continental network spanning Sub Saharan Africa that includes Governments, State Corporations and Private Sector. Dr Nyangasi is responsible for various government policy initiatives in the urban space especially around structured financing of urban areas. He has been instrumental in conceptualizing the sustainable subnational finance conversation in Kenya in partnership with institutions such as the Commission on Revenue Allocation, the Council of Governors, the National Treasury amongst others.
He has been the chair of the Kenya Cities Forum, an association of the five city counties in Kenya that was formed to pursue greater funding for the cities of Kenya. He has worked with many DFI’s, Private Equity, Institutional investors, Commercial Banks and Thematic Funds. He currently consults with the Africa Union Development Agency on the Program For Infrastructure Development for Africa. Dr Nyangasi holds an MBChB (UoN), Post Graduate Diploma in Research Methods, a Masters in Project Finance, Management and Planning (UON) and another in Economic/Public Policy Analysis (JKUAT).

Zeph Kivungi

Senior Associate, Country Programs & Partnerships, Africa

Zeph Kivungi is a Senior Associate focusing on Country Programs and Partnerships in Africa. His work involves collaborating with various stakeholders to implement programs that drive sustainable development across the continent. Zeph's role includes coordinating efforts to enhance program effectiveness and fostering partnerships that align with development goals.

Agnes Kariuki

Sustainability Manager, Safaricom PLC

Agnes is a responsible business and sustainability practitioner who is passionate about sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She has proven competencies in policy formulation and implementation of social policy projects on human rights issues and reducing inequalities in line with SDG 10. In addition, she has engaged in sustainability reporting, research, shared value partnerships and the Safaricom Foundation’s strategy development. Agnes has over 10 years progressive experience in various roles - in East Africa’s largest and most profitable company, Safaricom PLC- such as project management, operational management, unparalleled customer management, financial management and reporting. Agnes holds a degree in Community Development and Psychology from Daystar University and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from United States International University (USIU-Africa).

Bertha Mvati

Head of Vehicle Asset Finance, BasiGo

Bertha Mvati serves as the Head of Vehicle Asset Finance at BasiGo, an electric vehicle company in Kenya. She is responsible for developing financial solutions that enable the adoption of electric vehicles in the region. Bertha's work involves creating accessible financing options to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions.

Nushin Ghassmi

Global Head, Sustainability & Communication, Industrial Promotion Services (IPS)

Nushin Ghassmi is the Global Head of Sustainability and Communication at Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), an industrial development arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development. She leads sustainability initiatives and oversees corporate communications across IPS operations. Nushin's role includes promoting sustainable industrial practices and enhancing stakeholder engagement.

Edward Morrison

Co-founder, AGS Ltd, Ecologist Consultant

Edward Morrison is the co-founder of AGS Ltd and works as an ecologist consultant. His expertise lies in environmental conservation and sustainable land management practices. Edward collaborates with organizations and communities to implement ecological solutions that balance development and environmental preservation.

Prof. Levi Obonyo

Dean, School of Communication, Daystar University

Prof. Levi Obonyo is the Dean of the School of Communication at Daystar University, Kenya. He is a respected academic, researcher, and media policy expert, with extensive experience in journalism, media ethics, and regulatory affairs. Prof. Obonyo has played a significant role in shaping Kenya's media landscape, having previously served as the Chair of the Media Council of Kenya.
He holds a PhD in Communication and Media Studies from Temple University (USA) and has written extensively on journalism, press freedom, and media ethics in Africa. His book "Journalists and the Rule of Law" is a key contribution to media studies in Kenya. Prof. Obonyo also sits on various advisory boards and continues to mentor young journalists and communication scholars.

Christine Mungai

Curator, Baraza Media Lab

Christine Mungai is a journalist, writer, and media curator at Baraza Media Lab, a space for storytelling and media innovation in Kenya. She has written extensively on African socio-political issues for platforms such as The Africa Report, Al Jazeera, and The Elephant. Her work often explores identity, governance, and human rights.
Christine is also a former Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, where she focused on the intersection of media, democracy, and public discourse in Africa.

Cecilia Bjerborn Murai

Senior Specialist, Capital Markets

Cecilia Bjerborn Murai brings 25 years of experience in international and African settings, where she has been involved in developing and implementing programs and projects that focus on sustainable finance policy, investment strategies and instruments, and investor education. She has been an active player in the global sustainable business and finance sector since its inception and has, throughout her career, established impactful strategies and partnerships for institutions engaged in sustainable finance.
She has worked for over 15 years with the United Nations and the World Bank Group. During this time, she worked on global initiatives such as the UN Principles for Responsible Investing and at IFC as Global Sustainable Investing Lead with institutional investors in the US, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East and Southern Africa on their ESG integration strategies. She was part of pioneering projects such as the implementation of the first ESG equity indices in Brazil, MENA, and India. Before her work with the World Bank Group, she gained experience working for specialist sustainability management consulting firms in Sweden and the UK, implementing Environmental and Social Management Systems (ESMS) and reporting for clients in the construction, manufacturing, and utilities sectors.
She has spent the last decade living and working in Africa, primarily in transaction advisory for sustainable infrastructure as well as developing the Green and Sustainable Bond Market as a consultant for FSD Africa, creating sustainable bond listing guidelines in Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, and the SADC region, and providing training and technical support for green bond issuers, stock exchanges, fund managers, and regulators. She has also authored several market-leading Sustainability and Integrated Annual Reports for private sector companies in Kenya. She was a technical regional advisor for the EU Global Gateway project and led the Climate Finance pillar of the first African Climate Summit. Following that, she developed a program on debt sustainability initiatives and sustainable investment mobilization for UNECA and the African Union.
Cecilia holds an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Imperial College UK, is an Associate Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (AMIEM) UK and holds a certificate in Project Management from George Washington University, USA.
She enjoys spending time in nature with her family and supports the primary school’s extracurricular activities related to conservation and beach sports.
